About Infertility
Some of the possible causes of delays in conceiving
The reproductive system is a complex multi-organ and multi-hormone system involving many feedbacks to ensure correct hormone stimulation, correct hormone response and healthy reproductive tissue function. Although there are many advances in reproductive medicine, the most important thing to understand is that a hormone balance is only achieved through a truly holistic functioning of all the reproductive system role players all at the same time. Many infertility problems result from a breakdown in the balanced function of the reproductive system as a whole, which can be very effectively remedied using natural treatment. There are however specific infertility problems such as blocked fallopian tubes, uterine fibroids, genetic problems and male reproductive tissue damage or blockages that require medical treatment. In many cases the combination of natural treatment for infertility and reproductive medicine technology combine well to help couples conceive, their long awaited precious baby angel.
Below is a list of potential infertility causes looking at problems starting from the brain right down to basic hormone and reproductive tissue function.
Infertility has a specific hierarchy as it relates to the reproductive system.
- The hypothalamus and pituitary gland governs the whole fertility process, as they make the vital stimulating hormones that start the whole reproductive cycle. If the problem starts here, then none of the other reproductive systems can work even if they themselves do not have any problems.
- Metabolic and stress hormones, such as cortisol, thyroid hormones, insulin, glucagon, leptins and growth hormone all have to be functioning correctly in order not to interfere with the specific reproductive hormones.
- Reproductive tissues the ovaries, uterus, testes and prostate gland together with all the hormones they produce such as oestrogen, testosterone and progesterone all have to be functioning correctly to ensure a successful conception.
Infertility Cause 1: Inadequate Hypothalamus Function
This affects male infertility and female infertility.
Inadequate functioning of the hypothalamus, resulting from poor feedback mechanisms or stress can cause infertility. The hypothalamus is extremely sensitive to emotions, as well as to xenobiotics chemicals that mimic hormones), which are derived from plastic waste and hormone fed animals, and which may reduce stimulation of the pituitary gland. Genetic defects or tumours can also affect hypothalamic-pituitary access. Prolactin (from stress or breastfeeding) also inhibits pituitary release of the Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), which prevents the FSH message telling gonads to start egg or sperm production and luteinizing hormone LH which prevents ovulation.
Dr Colin's Reproductive health® Ferti-boost® natural infertility treatment approach:
The stress reducing effects of the natural medication contained in Ferti-boost® are capable of regulating the release of a hormone called ACTH, which is responsible for stimulating cortisol production (the stress hormone). The Homoeopathic medication acts on the hypothalamus' response to the hormone.
The Ferti-boost® Stimulating formula reduces prolactin and promotes LH, which stimulates ovulation and healthy corpus luteum growth, providing good amounts of progesterone.
Through Ferti-boost® support of the oestrogen, testosterone and progesterone production, correct feedback to the pituitary and hypothalamus reduces overproduction of FSH and LH, allowing for healthy gonad response to the stimulation of these hormones.

Infertility Cause 2: Slow Oestrogen Production through:
Oestrogen plays a vital role in follicle maturation, ovum (egg) and endometrium (uterus lining) growth, and is the most vital female hormone of the reproductive system. Without adequate oestrogen the follicle cannot be big enough for ovulation.
Factors affecting slow oestrogen production and resulting in low levels: Inadequate hormone precursors
- Oestrogen is ultimately made from testosterone which in turn comes from progesterone
- Nutrient lack or any metabolic influences that interfere with the formation of progesterone and testosterone will ultimately lead to deficiency of oestrogen
- Poor quality follicles
- From poor genetic quality (rare)
- Lack of resources, low oestrogen
- Too many woken up without resources to grow and ovulate
- Too low or too high FSH levels
- FSH too low fails to stimulate follicle growth
- FSH too high may lead to multiple follicles, weak ovarian response and can indicate a weak ovarian response, as in perimenopause
- Contraceptive pills, particularly progesterone only medication
- Constant level of false progesterone lead to oestrogen depletion due to suppressed follicle growth, this can cause oestrogen breakthrough bleeding as the endometrial lining fails to grow
- High cortisol levels
- Cortisol steals progesterone away from oestrogen production by using the majority of the progesterone
- Cortisol interferes with insulin and reduces Thyroxin (T4) conversion to Triodothyronine (T3), making reverse T3 (rT3). Insulin and rT3 both interfere with oestrogen production and follicle growth
- High insulin levels
- High levels of insulin interfere with testosterone conversion to oestrogen instead making dihydrotestosterone from testosterone
- High insulin levels come from too much sugar and high fructose corn syrup in the diet
- High levels of insulin also interfere with T4 to T3 conversion which is vital for follicle growth and oestrogen production
- Cortisol inhibits the effects of insulin on certain tissues causing high levels to deal with the increased glucose in the blood stream
- High Dihydrotestosterone (DHT)
- DHT production from testosterone prevents testosterone becoming oestrogen
- Higher DHT comes from an enzyme called 5 alpha reductase
- High insulin levels double the 5 alpha reductase, therefore increasing DHT and preventing oestrogen production
- Starvation and extreme exercise
- Both of these leads to high levels of cortisol and low levels of reproductive hormones, therefore inhibiting follicle growth and preventing both testosterone and oestrogen production
Dr Colin's Reproductive health® Ferti-boost® natural infertility treatment approach:
Ferti-boost® is designed to improve the response of receptor sites to the hormones. It acts as supportive nutrition, which aids in hormone production. Energetic stimulation of the body improves the quality of the hormones and tissues, improving natural fertility and the body's ability to function properly. By reducing cortisol and insulin levels, Ferti-boost® assists in making sure progesterone becomes testosterone and oestrogen, which is vital to male and female reproduction in making healthy sperm follicles and eggs.

Slow oestrogen production causes an infertile reproductive system. |
Infertility Cause 3: Over Production of Cortisol and Stress
Stress causes adrenal over-stimulation, and increased production of cortisol, the long-term stress hormone. Cortisol interference with reproduction by:
- Converting progesterone into cortisol instead of testosterone and oestrogen
- Increasing insulin levels
- Decreasesthyroid function by producing an interactive version of T3 called rT3. rT3 prevents the manufacture of T3 from T4 therefore slows down all metabolic processes including sperm and egg growth
- Immobilises the gut, fearing with nutrient absorption and digestion
- Inhibits virus, fungus and parasite growth. Fungal infections are commonly associated with hostile vaginal environment and vaginal acidity, which can kill off sperm, preventing conception
- High cortisol levels increase antibody activity, this may enhance autoimmune attackon implanting foetuses
Dr Colin's Reproductive health®Ferti-boost® natural infertility treatment approach:
The most profound effect of Ferti-boost® therapy is its cortisol reducing ability. While removing cortisol Ferti-boost®is capable of creating an optimum environment for progesterone to become testosterone and oestrogen. The reduction of cortisol has a profound calming effect, thereby reducing the effects of stress from our modern living. In reducing cortisol Ferti-boost® also assists in creating optimum insulin and thyroid hormone levels ideal for healthy natural fertility. Lifestyle and diet play a crucial role in adrenal and cortisol over-production which makes combining Ferti-boost® with sensible lifestyle choices an ideal combination for optimising natural fertility and the whole reproductive system.

Infertility is also caused by over production of Cortisol. |
Infertility Cause 4: Too high/low Progesterone Level
Progesterone is the precursor to all reproductive hormones and it is vital that its healthy levels are maintained and not converted into the stress hormone cortisol. Progesterone is also vital for maturation of the endometrium in the luteal phase of the cycle, ensuring an optimum environment for embryo implantation. Progesterone is vital for the maintenance of the endometrium throughout the pregnancy. A healthy endometrium allows for a healthy placenta ensuring proper nutrition to the growing fetus.
Progesterone withdrawal result in a menstrual bleed. Too low or too high a progesterone level can result in cyst formation, endometriosis, PMS, breast tenderness and painful periods.
Too high progesterone level may cause:
- Depression, aggression, insomnia and forgetfulness
- Early ovulation with premature ovum maturity,
- Inhibit ovum and follicle growth
- Migraines, strokes and heart attacks, thrombosis, breast tenderness and swelling and water retention
Too low a level may cause:
- Emotional effects from excessive progesterone
- Delayed ovulation and poor ovum maturation, as well as delayed periods.
- Anovulation
- Miscarriage
- Painful clotted, heavy menses
- Extremely low levels result inprolonged spotting before and after menstruation
- Emotional effects of low levels of progesterone
- Mood swings, poor concentration and memory loss
- Prolonged low levels have been associated with bipolar disorders
DrColin's Reproductive health®Ferti-boost® natural infertility treatment approach:
Ferti-boost® has a profoundability to reduce the cortisol drain on progesterone levels as well as nutritive support allowing the body to make optimum progesterone levels creates a stable base from which or other reproductive hormones can be made. Healthy progesterone levels ensure a healthy pregnancy which is Ferti-boost® is excellent support for early-stage pregnancy, ensuring good endometrium maturation and placental growth.

Problems or delayed Conceiving: Ferti-boost helps with a too high or low progesterone level. |
Infertility Cause 5: Too low or too high Oestrogen Levels
Low oestrogen levels prevent healthy follicle growth and ovum maturation. Low oestrogen levels also fail to create a negative feedback to the brain to stop FSH, which results in multiple follicle stimulation. Too many follicles trying to grow in a low oestrogen environment, means too little resources available for each one to grow properly, as a result we may have an accumulated level of oestrogen that appears normal, but it is from a whole group of poor quality follicles rather than one good quality, ideal follicle. Low oestrogen levels may cause LH not to trigger ovulation, or the accumulation of oestrogen from multiple follicles may trigger LH to soon, where there is no ripe or mature follicle.
If ovulation does occur with multiple follicles present it results in a rebound overproduction of oestrogen in the luteal phase which should be dominated normally by progesterone. The result of high oestrogen in the luteal phase of the cycle causes endometrium overgrowth and oestrogen continues to stimulate growth rather than allowing progesterone to cause maturation. The endometrium fails to convert into a secretory form which is necessary for implantation to occur; instead it results in heavy, clotted and painful periods. This is called oestrogen dominance, and may not necessarily be an oestrogen excess but rather oestrogen being in high levels in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle instead of being high during the follicular phase.
Diseases and disorders related for oestrogen imbalances:
- Ovarian cyst,
- Dysmenorrhoea,
- Menometrorrhagia,
- Endometriosis,
- Premenstrual syndrome,
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome,
- Uterine fibroids,
- Anovulation,
- Infertility,
- Mood swings,
- Headaches,
- Retrograde bleeding
Dr Colin's Reproductive health® Ferti-boost® natural infertility treatment approach:
Ferti-boost® in accordance with traditional Chinese medicine principles is a blood and Qi nourisher, as well as a uterus stagnation mover. Which means it provides all the necessary nutrients to make healthy follicles and oestrogen while preventing and oestrogen dominance and endometrial congestion. Ferti-boost® supports ovum maturation without over-stimulating the reproductive system, creating equilibrium between FSH, oestrogen and ovum response. It also prevents uterine congestion, which is a cause of period pain, endometriosis and infertility.
By reducing cortisol levels, Ferti-boost® ensures enough oestrogen is available at the beginning of the cycle, maturing of one healthy follicle growth cycle, instead of multiple immature follicles. When we have oestrogen and progesterone peaking at the correct times of the cycle, we prevent oestrogen dominance and low progesterone levels in the luteal phase.
The blood-nourishing response of Ferti-boost® promotes a healthy endometrium and improved nutritive and circulatory responses to the hormones.

Low Oestrogen levels can lead to an infertile reproductive system. |
Infertility Cause 6: Poor Sperm Production and Male Infertility
In men as with woman the hypothalamus and pituitary hormones begin the whole fertility process, but many other factors post pituitary interfere with the sperm production and male fertility.
Toxic damage and infections in the testicle can result in permanent irreversible damage to the testicles causing permanent male infertility. In cases of no sperm being produced in three subsequent spermiograms to rule out male infertility, it is advised to undergo a biopsy by an urologist to investigate the presence of sperm stem cells. In cases where there are no sperm stem cells no amount of natural medicine will be able to reverse this cause of male infertility.
It takes 72 days for one batch of sperm to grow from the stem cells to fully matured spermatozoa, new batches of sperm are starting and finishing every single day. This requires adequate nutrients such as zinc, selenium, l-arginine, l-carnitine, vitamin e and essential Omegas. Testosterone, growth hormone and T3 are necessary to be present for the full 72 their production line to ensure correct sperm growth and maturation.
Low testosterone levels, may result from:
- Damaged interstitial cells in the testosterone, sometimes the genetic reason for male infertility
- Low progesterone resources as described above
- High cortisol levels interfering with testosterone production, sperm production and male infertility
- High insulin levels converting testosterone to DHT leading to male infertility
- High testosterone levels
- Steroid used in medications and illegal bodybuilding drugs, can cause the body to shut down all natural testosterone production resulting in sterility which may be permanent and irreversible
Dr Colin's Reproductive health® Ferti-boost® natural infertility treatment approach:
The Yang enhancing effect of the Chinese herbal medicine component of Ferti-boost®, and the supportive effect of the Western herbal medicine component, energise and provide nutritional support for the manufacture and differentiation of sperm, under the positive influence of a consistent testosterone level. Homoeopathy ensures that the testes can respond appropriately to hormone stimulation.
The powerful cortisol reducing effects of Ferti-boost® allow for progesterone to turn into testosterone consistently throughout the whole 72 days production line. The sugar balancing and insulin regulating the effects of Ferti-boost® prevents the conversion of testosterone to high levels of DHT. DHT is 20 times more powerful in its masculinization and virilization effects than testosterone but it is ineffective in the maturation of sperm.

Homoeopathy ensures that the testes can respond appropriately to hormone stimulation. |
Infertility Cause 7: Post-Production Damage to Sperm
Healthy sperm may be damaged post-production by oxidation, infection, alcohol, acidity, high blood sugar levels and smoking. Coffee, high sugar intake, red meat and beer also interfere with enzymatic and nutritive support of the prostatic fluid, which the sperm needs in order to make the journey through the uterus to the fallopian tubes, where conception occurs.
Dr Colin's Reproductive health® Ferti-boost® natural infertility treatment approach:
Lifestyle changes are crucial to deal with the serious repercussions of poor habits. Ferti-boost™ provides antioxidant support, promoting the healthy functioning of prostate and sperm needed for conceiving a baby (links to reproduction page)

Damaged sperm can be a cause of infertility. |
Infertility Cause 8: Acidic Vaginal Environment
- The vaginal environment, mucus secretions and cilial action of the uterine lining and fallopian tube, all aid in the sperm's journey.
- Acidity interferes with the vaginal mucus membranes and cilia, and an
acidic vaginal environment is hostile to sperm.
- Delayed ovulation affects the mucus protection offered to the sperm by the normal vaginal environment, which prevents passage of the sperm through the cervix into the uterus.
- Oestrogen dominant patterns favour acid environments.
- Overly stressed systems due to cortisol over production suppress the control over candida and yeast growth also favouring an acidic hostile vaginal environment.
Dr Colin's Reproductive health® Ferti-boost® natural infertility treatment approach:
Avoiding acid-forming food, like wheat, sugar and chilli, provides a healthy intrauterine and vaginal environment. Ferti-boost® promotes healthy levels of LH at ovulation, which liquefies the cervical mucus. The cortisol reducing effects of Ferti-boost® assist the immune system in the control Candida.
